There are an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic floating in the world’s oceans, weighing a total of nearly 270,000 tons, according to a new study.

Plastic has “spread throughout all the world's oceans” with as much in the southern hemisphere as the northern, the researchers said, adding that this was surprising as more of it originates in the north.

In an article for the Plos One journal, they said the figures were “highly conservative” and did not take into account “the potentially massive amount” that is no longer afloat.

Julia Reisser, a researcher with the University of Western Australia, told The Guardian: “We saw turtles that ate plastic bags and fish that ingested fishing lines.

“But there are also chemical impacts. When plastic gets into the water it acts like a magnet for oily pollutants.

“Bigger fish eat the little fish and then they end up on our plates. It’s hard to tell how much pollution is being ingested but certainly plastics are providing some of it.”

The article cited trade body Plastics Europe as saying 288 million tons of plastic were produced worldwide in 2012.

“Our estimate of the global weight of plastic pollution on the sea surface, from all size classes combined, is only 0.1 per cent of the world annual production,” it said.

“However, we stress that our estimates are highly conservative, and may be considered minimum estimates.

“Our estimates of macroplastic are based on a limited inventory of ocean observations … they also do not account for the potentially massive amount of plastic present on shorelines, on the seabed, suspended in the water column, and within organisms.”

Lack of Building Space Inspires Chinese School to Build Running Track on Its Roof

To conserve on land usage, an elementary school in Tiantai, Zhejiang province, built a 200-meter running track on the roof of its school building. 

The students of No 2 Elementary School of Tiantai Chicheng district started using the track on Monday. The school has about 1,800 students. 

Qiu Tianguo, the school's principal, said the track, on top of a four-story, oval teaching building, provides more than 3,000 square meters of space for students to play and exercise.

Qiu said that the school, with a footprint of 7,210 sq m, doesn't have room for a playground with a running track on the ground. 

"The track on the roof perfectly solved the problem. Our students love the new track," he said. 

Ruan Hao, chief architect of the teaching building, said that breaking the tradition of a running track on the ground might provide a solution for other schools with limited land.

"Under the circumstances that limited land cannot provide enough space for students to exercise in, we chose to challenge the concept that playgrounds and tracks have to be on the ground," he said. 

The design represented China at the 14th Venice Architecture Exhibition this year.

Safety is the key concern with rooftop tracks. For the track in Tiantai, three protective layers will keep students safe. The outer layer is a 1.8-meter-tall, tempered glass wall that students can't climb; the middle layer is a green belt; and the inner layer is a 1.2-meter-tall stainless steel rail. 

Qiu said that students using the track are accompanied by teachers, and surveillance cameras around the track will make sure there is no blind spot.

"Safety can surely be guaranteed," he said.

Elderly Care Home in Germany Uses Therapy Alpacas to Make Residents Happier

Just looking at the picture of an alpaca will make you want to pet the adorable creature. So it comes as no surprise that the camel’s super fluffy cousin is being used for therapy in Germany, at Berlin’s Mana Wedell Tagespflege elderly care home.

A group of alpacas live in the home’s garden and are welcome to go inside for a visit. A video of their interaction with the residents was put up on YouTube, and although it is in German, you can tell that the place is so full of love.

The footage shows the alpacas being taken to each of the residents’ rooms for a visit. It appears that the alpacas are incredibly affectionate and love to be cuddled. They also seem to enjoy being given tasty treats and like riding the elevator. The residents also have a great time petting and spoiling the delightful animals, making them happier and healthier.

Medical research shows that animal-assisted therapy can reduce anxiety, depression, fatigue and even pain. This is especially effective for people who live in long-term care facilities. While safety and sanitation might raise some concerns, a little extra care from the staff ensures that both the animals and the residents are happy. The alpacas used for the therapy need to be clean, vaccinated, trained and screened for behavior before they are permitted to interact with residents.

Eaten alive: Anaconda man explains stunt

The American naturalist who filmed himself being eaten by an anaconda for a television event has explained what inspired him to take part in the risky stunt.


Paul Rosolie donned a special suit to let a 25-foot 400-pound snake eat him in a dangerous performance set to air on Discovery Channel.


He was so confident in the suit's design that he was more worried about the snake's safety than his own, the Daily Mail reported.



'I didn’t want to stress [the snake] out too much. I wanted to make sure that the suit was smooth and wasn’t going to hurt the snake,' Rosolie said. ' I really wasn’t scared. We tested this suit and worked on this with experts so we knew I was going to be safe.'


Amid a backlash from animal rights activists who believe the anaconda was tortured by being forced to eat Rosolie, a man much bigger than its usual prey, Rosolie has responded to say the snake was unharmed and that the experiment was designed to raise money to save the animal's habitat.

Villagers in Hunan drink feces laced water to cure cancer

Residents Hunan's Xiangtan county's Jinshi village have been drinking water mixed with goat or cow feces to prevent or cure cancers. The preventative measures stunned Chinese internet users who said the residents are either too ignorant or too poor to go to the hospital for proper treatment, reports Jiangsu-based Xinhua Daily Media Group.

Despite all the doctors who have refuted the feces' medical effects, the residents collected fresh goat or cow feces daily, dried them under the sun before grinding them into powder and drinking it with water. They believe that water can treat and control cancers. Two elderly residents who claimed they cured their cancers with the elixir began the trend.

Chinese internet users have not taken to the idea however. They have mostly blasted the residents for their ignorance. Netizen "utty_zqn" said mockingly that the treatment will shut down all tumor hospitals in Beijing. Another netizen lamented that it was "Such heart wrenching news. I cannot believe people that in the 21st century and in a country that is the world's second largest economy by GDP, people still treat cancers likes this. Who would eat that if one has the money?" One concerned netizen with the handle "T-ingofpop-AO" said people should think clearly before they drink the water since feces may have many microorganisms and parasites' eggs.

The Jiangsu media group found out the two elderly villagers who claimed they were cured by the water were only diagnosed with cancer but never went to a hospital to accept further examination or confirm the prognosis. Both of the elders are too poor and cannot afford to.

3 days IN BLACK WITHOUT SUN: NASA CONFIRMS

NASA has confirmed that the three days of darkness will take place this year on days 21, 22 and 23 December. The land will remain during these three days without sun, night ie in total darkness due to a solar storm ....

This is the head of NASA Charles Bolden who made the announcement and asked everyone to remain calm. This will be the product of a solar storm, the largest in the last 50 years for a period of 72 hours.

Note that in the responses of Light Beings to questions Monique Mathieu by his members "From Heaven to Earth," she wrote: "The three days of darkness will actually take place. This will be an extremely difficult time for humanity.

According to this message, which is making its way around via social media and email, NASA has predicted that the earth will experience a total blackout for a three day time period in December. 

The original version of the message claimed that the blackout was to occur in December 2012. A more current version specifies the date as just December this year. 

The first version of the message claimed that during the blackout period, the universe would be aligned and the earth would shift into the zero dimension before shifting to its new home in the fourth dimension. The message recommended that during the blackout time, people stay calm and pray to prepare themselves for a brand new world. But, warned the message, many people who remained unprepared might die of fear during the blackout. 

The updated version of the message blames the cause of the blackout on a large solar flare and claims that the impending blackout had been predicted for centuries by different religions and traditions. 

Not surprisingly, the claims in both versions of the message are complete and utter nonsense. NASA has made no such prediction. Nor has any other credible scientific organization anywhere else in the world. 

In what is apparently an utterly lame attempt to make its outlandish claims seem more believable, the message links to a video featuring NASA administrator Charles F. Bolden, Jr. In the video, Bolden does talk about family preparedness but makes no mention of planetary blackouts, universe alignments or even shifts to the zero dimension. The video can be seen in its original context on the NASA website. 

And, for the record, there is no mention of such an impending blackout anywhere on the NASA website. Nor are there any reports about it on any credible news or scientific websites.  

Perhaps who ever penned this piece of nonsense meant it as just a leg-pull. A bad science fiction writer perhaps? And a master of understatement? The messages predict a catastrophic, utterly world changing event but ends with a casual warning to avoid traveling in December! But whatever its motivation, submissions and comments indicate that the message is nevertheless causing fear and anxiety among at least a few of the more wide-eyed among us.
