HAS human laziness hit the next level?
A struggling South Korean professional baseball team is attempting to improve the atmosphere at games by bringing in a crowd of robots.
The robots are for Hanwha Eagles fans who can’t make the game, so instead they can control a robot that’s in the stadium over the internet.
The robots can cheer, chant and can even do the old Mexican wave if you so desire your robot friend to do so. If you’re worried that the robots won’t have the same personal touch that you can add to the stadium, you will be pleased to know that you can upload a picture of your face to the robot to add that human element. They can’t get drunk and rowdy, however.
The Hanwha Eagles have been on a horrible losing streak for years now, and the robots are hoping to boost interest into the team and hopefully add some atmosphere to games with dwindling crowds. South Korea is actually a powerhouse in international baseball, winning the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. So the Eagles needed to try something to entice demanding South Korean baseball fans back to the stands.
While the Eagles receive 10 points for effort, is their robot attempt just testament to the decline of society? Have we really become so time poor that we can’t schedule in some quality time at a game with mates? Yikes.
